Ik heb met whatsapp gemaild. Ik heb ze de volgende vraag gesteld:

I've got a question for you. Why is it that whatsapp makes a copy of a
picture that I send via whatsapp in my gallery, every time?
Has this something to do with rescaling/downscaling the picture? Or maybe
compressing it towards a lesser resolution to save data bandwith?

Daarop kreeg ik het volgende antwoord:
We have implemented a new auto-download feature - shared image files will now be auto-downloaded to the chat.
This way, you don't need to wait for an image to download. Just tap to view!
In addition, each image file is only 70~120KB. If 100 images are auto-downloaded, it comes out to 7~12MB.
If you have a 1GB plan, this is only 0.5 ~ 0.7% of your plan.
Keep in mind this applies only to image files and *not* to videos or audio notes, since videos and audio files are significantly larger.
Note: The recent version of WhatsApp does not include the setting to disable auto-download. It is now on by default.

Dat is dus maar een half antwoord. De truc is dus dat ze alle plaatjes die voorkomen in whatsapp gesprekken lokaal op je toestel opslaan. Op die manier hoeven ze maar 1 keer gedownload te worden van de server. Als je dan de volgende keer het gesprek opent en bij een plaatje op "weergeven" klikt, kan het meteen geopend worden, in plaats van dat het eerst weer gedownload moet worden. Dat scheelt tijd en geld. Enige vraag is waarom ze dit ook doen met plaatjes die door jezelf verstuurd worden? Die staan reeds op het toestel, dus om ze dan weer opnieuw te downloaden omdat ze getoond worden in het gesprek is een beetje overkill. Ik heb daar over gemaild met ze (lees beneden), maar ik heb nog geen antwoord ontvangen.

But that only should happen for pictures that are sent TO someone. Not for pictures that you SEND to other people. Because the ones that you sent yourselves are already on your phone? So why download them again? That makes no sence at all and even burns more dataplan then it should? Is there a setting to have this auto download feature only on for the pictures you receive? Not for the ones you sent?Best Regards
