My contract is upon till October but I would like to extend for longer, do I have to contact Vodafone or is it just going to extend itself ?

you can simply continue your subscription. the advantage is that you can then extend at any time or conclude a new contract for a certain period of time.

you are therefore not obliged to renew your subscription. if you are now satisfied with your subscription, just let it continue. I would then do nothing myself and occasionally check whether there is a nice offer at Vodafone. you can always decide to sign a new contract.
